WCT NEWS
Somewhere in Chile....
RIP CURL SEARCH WCT

June 20-July 1, 2007
St. Leu, Reunion Island (2005), Somewhere in Mexico (2006), Somewhere in
Chile (2007)

TIME DIFFERENCE: Unknown

COORDINATES: 2005 was 21º 11' S, 55º 17' E. 2006 was top secret. 2007 is TBD...maybe

BAGGAGE CLAIM: TBD

TRANSPORTATION: TBD

ATTITUDE: Two words: The Search. Rip Curl's longstanding campaign to seek out and find the best surf possible in the most remote regions on Earth has finally translated to the Foster's ASP World Tour. With event
locations shrouded in mystery, it's really anybody's game, and the competitors are transformed into nervous, excited grommets again.

THE WAVE: In 2005, it was a beautiful, coral-reef lefhander that offered high-performance conditions for all skill levels. Working from three to 12 feet and beyond, the break of St. Leu on Reunion Island was an ideal
location for the inaugural Rip Curl Search WCT event. In 2006, Rip Curl scored what many have considered "the best WCT event ever" as "La Jolla" spun reeling righthand barrels for three days straight before vanishing. While the tight-lipped crew at Rip Curl has continued their mysterious reign of terror in '07, the collective surfing community knows that the event will be held somewhere in Chile. With the country's penchant for jaw-dropping lefthanders, look for the continued success of the Rip Curl Search event to excel this season.

PERKS: At St Leu, the waves, the beautiful backdrop, and the hospitality of the people made the groundbreaking event even more special. Last season's jaunt down in Mexico transformed the entire ASP top-45 into frothing grommets as the feasted on an endless buffet of sand-bottom barrels. Huey only knows what will become of the event this year, but the anticipation is a perk in its own right.

PERILS: At St Leu, it was the occasional frisky shark, and the more than occasional pesky urchin. In Mexico, the only perils were the bone-crunching sandbar and the fierce heat. In 2007, we have no idea what
the perils may be. Perhaps giant squids, vampiric mermaids or ghost ships, who knows? But we might as well throw the world's best out there first to be the guinea pigs.

APRES SURF: In St Leu all you had to do was exit the water and bask in the island's beauty or enjoy the hospitality of the locals - helped if you spoke French though. In Mexico, margaritas and aloe vera were the call
after gorging yourself on barrels all day. We'll just have to wait and see what Chile brings to the table.

WCT HISTORY: Rip Curl held its inaugural Search WCT event in 2005 at the famed lefthander of St Leu in Reunion Island. The second event took the ASP top-45 into deepest, darkest Mexico. Boasting a new venue each season, Rip Curl claims the 2007 event will be somewhere in Chile.

NOTABLE: The Rip Curl Search event is the first WCT event where the licensee is opting to change the location every year. Rip Curl teamrider and Australian phenomenon Mick Fanning won the inaugural event in 2005 in his first season back after a near career-ending injury.

PAST CHAMPS:
2006: Andy Irons (HAW) at La Jolla, Mexico
2005: Mick Fanning (AUS) at St Leu, Reunion Island

Banzai Pipeline: North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii, USA

RIP CURL PIPELINE MASTERS
December 8-20, 2006
Banzai Pipeline: North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii, USA

LATITUDE: 21º40' N

LONGITUDE: 158º03' W

TIME DIFFERENCE: GMT - 10:00

ATTITUDE: Pipeline is the powder keg of the surfing world. Surfers from hundreds of countries travel here to prove their moxie in the caverns of Pipe. With the inundation of surfers in the line-up, the take off zone makes for some volatile situations. Be advised: venture to Pipe, and be prepared to do battle - not just with the sea, but with your fellow surfers.

THE WAVE: Exploding tubes over shallow lava reef and sand. For decades, Pipe has been considered the most dangerous wave on the planet and shows no sign of slowing down. However, great risk yields great reward, and it's not uncommon to hear the phrase "best wave of my life" thrown around.

PERKS: Guts for Glory. People make their entire careers out of surfing the Pipeline. Make your mark on this wave, and you'll go down in surfing lore.

PERILS: Shallow reefs, crowded line-ups, massive locals and an occasional camio by Jaws.

APRES SURF: Big Hawaiians throw Big Parties. There's always something going on. Pick up some snacks and beverages at Kammieland, and head down to the nearest BBQ - make sure you know someone there though.

WCT HISTORY: Although hosted by a slew of sponsors over the years, the WCT event at Pipe has most recently been backed by Australian giant Rip Curl. The inaugural Rip Curl Pipemasters was won by wildcard teamrider Jaime O'Brien in 2004.

NOTABLE: Pipeline is held (by many) with as much reverence as the World Title itself. The history of the place, combined with the sheer ferocity of the wave, makes winnning the Pipemasters a career highlight.
